Google has announced the launch of its new service; Google Books. Currently, you can purchase books (U.S. only) or download more than 3 million free books from anywhere in the world using this service. The aim of this project is to provide users with their own bookshelf on hand, no matter where they are. Purchased or downloaded books can be read using a desktop browser, as well as through mobile devices based on the Android operating system or iOS. Additionally, the books can be read on any e-reader with Adobe Digital Editions software.

As opposed to the Picasa service which provides an access to photos, the Google Books service does not allow users to download free electronic editions without digital copy protection and use them on other devices. Google Books Downloader is a little software that allows you to save these books in PDF or JPEG format (note: it supports only the books marked as “full view”).

JavaScript Garden – Want to Learn JavaScript’s Quirk

March 13, 2011 |  by  |  Author's Outlook  |  No Comments

JavaScript Garden – A website developed by a bunch of developers stack overflow users, Ivo Wetzel (Writing) who is Zynga JavaScript dev and Zhang Yi Jiang (Design) and well contributed by IBM engineer Caio Romão (Spelling corrections) and Spotify dev Andreas Blixt (Language corrections)  has been launched recently to hel us understand the more intricate, difficult and quirky aspects of JavaScript.

The tutorial is not aimed at teaching the basics of Javascript rather it is focused to refine the learning of the language for current Javascript programmers a straightforward way from basis to adnvanced JavaScript techniques. They strongly recommended basic understanding of Javascript to help you reap the maximum benefit covered in the guide i.e. “avoid common mistakes, subtle bugs, as well as performance issues and bad practices.”

JavaScript Garden is a growing collection of documentation about the most quirky parts of the JavaScript programming language. It gives advice to avoid common mistakes, subtle bugs, as well as performance issues and bad practices that non-expert JavaScript programmers may encounter on their endeavours into the depths of the language.

If you’re just starting out in JavaScript, the creators of the JavaScript Garden recommend Mozilla’s guide on the subject

It covers common misconceptions and bugs related to objects, prototypes, functions, this, closures, the arguments object, scoping, equality and comparisons, typeof and instanceof, and much more. If you find errors or typos please file an issue or a pull request on the repository.

My personal opinion is one should appreciate the efforts of developers who take out time from their busy schedules to teach others with practical approach, ample examples and  high–level application development techniques. A tool we’d like to see applied to more languages.

Just to get you started
Javascript (earlier called LiveScript) is an open, dynamic, weakly typed scripting language developed by Netscape used to make web pages interactive, design interactive sites. It runs on your visitor’s computer and so does not require constant downloads from your web site. It interacts with HTML source code, enabling you to make the site dynamic.

Best ways to fight Examination stress

March 11, 2011 |  by  |  Author's Outlook  |  2 Comments

Best ways to fight examination stressExamination time these days is not just stressful for children but also for parents. It brings in loads of stress, anxiety and jitters for all of them. Besides studying hard, parents also need to take care of their childrens’ eating habits, study patterns and their mental and physical fitness. It’s a No-brainer to feed your brain with the right kind of fuel during exams. Exam time means your child will definitely be stressed out even if he is all prepared. There comes up a different Do’s and Don’ts list for children every time they have to face exams.

Generally children succumb under this exam terror/pressure and indulge in irregular eating or I should say unhealthy eating habits. “Drink plenty of water”, “Have healthy breakfast”, “Include more fruits in your diet”, “Start drinking milk thrice a day”, “ Do have salad and sprouts with your meals”, “Stay Away from oily/junk/street food!” are some of the statements/advices/suggestions poured consistently on children by parents/teachers during exam time.

So, without gulping Dietary supplements, without the overdose of coffee and even without slugging pizza/burger at every impulse…..will your child be able to stay fresh, healthy, De- stressed and all attentive to study for longer hours? Yes…it is possible!

Here are some simple, detailed tips to make that possible for your child:

Right/Healthy Diet:

  1. Instead of taking 3 Big meals a day, go for 5-6 smaller, well-balanced mealsBest ways to fight examination stress
  2. Drink plenty of water and liquids and keep your body hydrated to fight stress
  3. Sounds clichéd but yes Green veggies in the form of salads, soups, meals actually works wonders for your health. Specially during examsJ
  4. Eat a lot of nuts. Especially overnight soaked almonds. They work wonders for your brain and eyes.
  5. Include a lot of Iron rich  foods in your diet. Have spinach, cereals, red meat, beans, figs and prunes
  6. Try to consume more of whole grains as they are easy to digest
  7. Start consuming plenty of proteins. Fish, soya bean, veggies, milk, eggs, yogurt, peanut butter, cheese, pasta, legumes. Pick the ones you like the most and start eating!
  8. How can we forget fruits while talking about healthy eating! All fruits are full of nutrition and very beneficial. Eat them regularly. They actually make you feel fresh
  9. Avoid potatoes to the max
  10. Reduce your intake of caffeine as its overdose makes you feel fidgety. Instead, have more of Green Tea, Fresh juices, milk and water
  11. Eating healthy doesn’t mean you’ll only stick to normal meals. You can always have your food but once in a week types. This will help your craving.

Some other equally important practices to increase your productivity during exams:

  1. Best ways to fight examination stressDon’t ban but balance: Do not completely refrain or ban things you love doing the most. Do devote a little (15-20 mins) but substantial time to those activities. Yes, I am talking about TV, Music, Hanging at your favourite place with your friends, stroll in the garden, video game or any game which you enjoy the most. Indulging in extra-curricular activities help you de-stress easily and recreates you like anything!
  2. Eyes: Give them rest after every 30 minutes of continuous reading. Blinking also helps. Refrain from reading in a sleeping position as it over-strains your eyes. Make sure there is abundant lighting in the room in which you study. Hostel students should try to make less use of Table lamps for reading as it strains your eyes excessively!
  3. Do take 7-8 hours of sleep: Remember, your mind/brain works the best when it gets complete rest. One night stands turn out to be risky. So never compromise on rest. Sleep regularly to score well
  4. Manage/Prioritise your time efficiently: Exam time is generally the time of revisions. Set up a well-worked out schedule with which you can manage everything effectively. Do prioritize your weak subjects and work harder on them
  5. Do take a lot of Sample Tests to gain expertise in that particular subject/area
  6. Take regular short breaks to refresh your mind
  7. Do spend some time on small breathing exercises/ yoga to de stress yourself
  8. Brisk walk/Playing/Dancing/Aerobics for 15-20 minutes refreshes your mind and makes it more productive
  9. Visualise the time after the exams when you’ll be absolutely free of all the stress and anxiety
  10. Stay calm and simply be happy. This will help you stay positive!

So here’s wishing you all the very best for your exams. Hope the above points work realistic for you and make you excel in your endeavours!!
